Roediger describes his own youth as "ordinary" both in its unfolding in a lower middle-class family of southern Illinois workers and in the depth of white racism he was taught. Raised in a "sundown town"-Blacks had to be out by dark-Roediger was "saved" by social movements, including those of labor, against empire, and above all those for Black freedom, first in the city where he spent summers. What made such salvation stick included things also ordinary: public education, dissenting currents in Catholicism, knowledge of the importance of good union jobs, and generative impulses in sports and music. His knowledge of white advantage came from personal everyday experience, but among people ordinary enough to guard against the mistaken notion that poor and working whites are uniquely the culprits, changeless and uniform, delivering the US to white nationalism. He began addressing whiteness and its costs by studying African American history and Black critiques of white power. A teacher in state universities for forty years, Roediger has fought against their being hollowed out by corporate values and austerity.
