The Athonites claim their monastic republic to be the oldest continuing democracy in existence. Today there are about 1, 300 monks striving towards deification - union with God. In this book, based on extensive field research, René Gothóni, a Scandinavian specialist on monasticism, sheds fresh light on the life of the monks and the pilgrimages of ordinary men. His modern and unconventional approach has produced the first book on Athos from the viewpoint of comparative religion. René Gothóni asks: "What does it mean to be a monk? What kind of worldview do the Athonites have? What are the meanings and values attached to their mode of life? Why do laymen come to Athos? Are they pilgrims, tourists or visitors?" He shows how monks assume the role of Adam in accordance with the Biblical worldview, how visitors become pilgrims during their journey. Sincere monks and pilgrims experience a foretaste of inner peace, of paradise within reach. The author, René Gothóni, is Senior Lecturer of Comparative Religion at the University of Helsinki and Ordinary Member of the Finnish Society of Science and Letters.
