Its purpose is to underline the meaning of the 1923 Lausanne settlement -that milestone in Greek - Turkish relations- to contemporary problems in the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean. The study may also be useful in efforts to deal with pressing boundary disputes and the problems of minorities which have emerged in recent years as a result of the multiplicity of new states: Realizing, of course, that these problems differ in nature as well as in degree, from one continent to the next, from one region to another.
