During the next two decades, all churches and mosques were closed or destroyed, religious customs and names were outlawed, and clergy were imprisoned or killed. To the outside world, Albania became a closed and almost forgotten land. Following the overthrow of the communist dictatorship in 1991, churches and religious communities began to emerge from their underground existence. One of these communities was the Orthodox Church, traditionally the oldest and largest Christian church in the country. Under the inspired leadership of Archbishop Anastasios, the Church has sought to rebuild itself spiritually and materially while also participating in the healing and revival of Albanian society. In 1992, the Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania was officially re-established, and in 1994 it joined the World Council of Churches.
