L’image du patriarche Kirill bénissant avions et chars russes partant détruire l’Ukraine a ravivé les clichés d’une orthodoxie belliciste, ultraconservatrice et homophobe, radicalement hostile à l’Otan et aux valeurs démocratiques occidentales. Cet essai à la fois historique et géopolitique nous permet de mieux comprendre le monde orthodoxe, sa culture et son rôle politique.<br/><br/>Avec près de 300 millions de fidèles, l’Église orthodoxe est la troisième confession chrétienne, après le catholicisme et le protestantisme. Si elle fascine souvent les Européens pour la beauté de ses liturgies, de ses chants envoûtants et de ses icônes, elle reste très méconnue.<br/><br/>Son histoire est marquée par une relation douloureuse avec l’Occident, accusé de l’avoir condamnée à un rôle de rempart face à l’islam. La réalité pourtant est plus nuancée et montre une religion plurielle, qui a souvent cohabité harmonieusement avec le monde musulman. Placée au carrefour des empires disparus – byzantin, ottoman ou russe –, l’orthodoxie a été déchirée par la guerre froide, avant de se retrouver au cœur des conflits de notre temps – guerres des Balkans, d’Irak, de Syrie ou d’Ukraine. Que ce soit dans la Serbie de Miloševi ou la Russie de Poutine, elle a souvent été prise au piège des nationalismes.<br/><br/>Le monde orthodoxe n’a jamais semblé aussi divisé que depuis le 24 février 2022. Comprendre et décrypter sa complexité et sa réelle proximité avec les pouvoirs politiques, c’est tout l’enjeu de cet ouvrage aussi passionnant que nécessaire. |
