Text of Note Hayyim Schauss’ “The Lifetime of a Jew” discusses the significant aspects in the life of the individual Jew from birth to death. The treatment followed in this book is the same so successfully achieved by the author in his previous volume on “The Jewish Festivals.” This is the first book in which a writer not only gives the historical and ceremonial significance of each of the great events of birth, bar mitsvo, education, marriage, and death, but also traces the observances connected with these events through the centuries and in various lands. The book therefore is a unique contribution to the story of Jewish life. The author, who is steeped in Jewish life and lore, approaches his subject critically, yet with warmth, sympathy, and enthusiasm. This twofold treatment is indeed a significant achievement. As a result, the book will serve as a popular reader for young people and adults, as well as a book of study for all those who are interested in the subject.
